We were looking for a housewarming gift for an upcoming closing and thought that the Nest Learning Thermostat that fit the bill — quite literally!
We like the idea of a thermostat that lowers your heating and cooling bills because it figures out for itself when you need to adjust the temperature by knowing when you’re active in your house or away from your house.  If you want to override these “learned” settings, you can do that remotely from your phone — a benefit easy to identify if you’re someone who has come home from a long trip only to find your house unbearably warm or cold.  Plus, the Nest provides reports of your usage and settings so you can look back to identify opportunities for more efficient energy use.
